PT Health Life – Scoliosis is common in children 12-15 years old. If the scoliosis is mild, it usually does not cause serious consequences.

However, if not treated early, scoliosis can progress seriously and affect health and quality of life later on.

1. The boy has a deformed spine, curvature of 66 degrees

The Department of Trauma and Orthopedics of the Spine, Central Military Hospital 108 has just received treatment for a 3-year-old patient with B.D. from Thanh Hoa. The baby’s parents discovered an abnormality in his spine when he was 2 years old and took him to the doctor. They were diagnosed with severe congenital thoracic-lumbar scoliosis due to deformity of the L1 half vertebra.

According to doctors, the child can still walk, but his spine is misaligned, he has difficulty bending and has limited movement due to back pain. B.D’s spinal deformity is at a severe level, with a curvature angle of 66 degrees; If surgery is delayed until the child is 6 years old or older, surgery to correct scoliosis will not be possible.

Luckily, the surgery that took place 2 weeks ago was successful. The patient recovered smoothly, his legs moved normally, he was learning to sit and walk.

Pay attention to training children in the correct sitting posture to avoid scoliosis.

2. What is the reason?

The spine plays a very important role in all human life activities. The spine is the pillar of the body, a solid support for organ systems to develop, protects the spinal cord, and absorbs shock for the brain. Thanks to the spine, the body can move flexibly, turn left, right, bend or arch, and dance easily, giving the body many different positions.

There are many causes of scoliosis. Some children are born with congenital curvature or scoliosis. Some children have scoliosis due to sitting or walking too early or suffer from neurological diseases, muscle diseases, injuries, poor physical condition due to lack of sports activities, malnutrition (rickets), Labor intensity is not appropriate for age. In many cases, the cause of scoliosis cannot be determined.

Scoliosis at school age can arise due to incorrect sitting posture because the desk and chair are not suitable for the student’s height, poor desk lighting, or carrying a school bag that is too heavy on one shoulder.

3. How to recognize early

Spinal curvature is a phenomenon in which the spine is bent beyond normal physiological levels in the neck, thoracic or lumbar segments. When the neck is bent too much, the head will lean forward, the shoulders will sag and the lumbar curvature will decrease (shoulder sagging posture). If the chest segment is bent excessively backwards, the back is rounded, the shoulders are low, the head is slightly tilted, and the abdomen protrudes forward (called a hunchback position). If the lumbar curve is bent too far forward, the abdomen sags, and the upper part of the body leans slightly backward (called an arched posture).

Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine to the right or left. When suffering from scoliosis, if the top of the curve points to the right, the spine has an inverted C shape; if the top of the curve points to the left, the spine has a forward C shape. If the spine has two symmetrical curves, it will have a forward or reverse S shape (also called compensatory scoliosis).

In the case of scoliosis, abnormalities can be seen such as: the vertebral spines are not aligned; the shoulders slope unevenly, one high and the other low; The shoulder blades protrude, the distance from the two shoulder blades to the vertebral spine is not equal; The 2 waist triangles created between the arms and body are not equal, one side is wide and the other is narrow; iliac crest, low side, high side; The two loins are unbalanced or have bulges due to the spine being twisted and the ribs protruding.

4. Create correct sitting habits for prevention

To prevent scoliosis, first of all it is necessary to improve the general health of the body by exercising to strengthen the muscles, connective organizations, ligaments and joints, increasing flexibility. Persistence and balanced development.

It is necessary to prevent malnutrition and rickets in young children. The diet should contain enough protein, minerals and vitamins.

Study tables and chairs must be age appropriate and the sitting posture must be correct.

Students need to have their spine examined periodically to detect cases of scoliosis early so that they can be promptly managed and treated. In addition, when seeing unusual symptoms in the baby, parents need to take the baby to a medical facility for examination and examination to receive specific advice.
